“A single tree falling is much louder than the whole forest growing”
When watching the news, reading the newspaper, browsing the events of the day, one easily can get the impression, that the world is a cold, brutal and probably doomed place.
Violence, wars, poverty, hate, corruption…
Where are all the great news?
Well, the great news happen on a different scale. they happen on a basic, personal level. The little joys of life like…
- the smell of rain after a dry summerweek
- digging your hand into a bowl of dry rice
- getting your hair shampooned in a salon
- the feeling when you first awake but don’t need to get up and just turn around
- dangling a cool metal chain over your hand and lowering it down slowly so it collects in your hand..
These are not things we deem newsworthy.
The daily love from a parent to a child, the kind help from a neighbour don’t make it into the prime time news or even the history books.
Only the really big events make it into the history books. Events that have a huge impact on many people. And these are usually bad things.
So our history books are filled with a chain of dramatic and violent stories, leaving out all the small but much more important goodness of daily life.
And only the sickest crimes make it into todays boulevard news. Nobody is interested in a boring small everyday crime. It’s a freakshow, and the freakier, the more attention.
Todays media and our history books draw a picture that actually doesn’t match the world we actually live in.
Look around, find love and happiness in these small joys, in the daily love we often take for granted and forget.
The world turns into a beautiful place as soon as you stop to focus on the noisy falling tree and start to pay attention the silently growing forest.
